About Mattress Recycling

Mattress Recycling Information

When it comes to recycling, most people focus on the usual suspects: paper, plastic, and aluminum cans. But there's one common household item that often gets overlooked: mattresses. According to the EPA, Americans throw away approximately 20 million mattresses each year. And while some of these mattresses end up in landfills, an increasing number are being recycled.

One person's trash is another person's treasure, and that's especially true when it comes to mattresses. When you're done with your mattress, don't just throw it away - recycle it! Mattress recycling is a growing industry, and there are many ways to give your old mattress a new lease on life. For example, the steel coils from a mattress can be reused to create new metal products. The wood frame can be repurposed as furniture or flooring. Even the fabric and padding can be recycled into insulation or carpet padding. So don't toss your mattress in the dumpster - recycle it and give it a second chance!

Recycling a mattress is a process that can give new life to an old mattress. The recycling process begins by removing the outer covering and any foam or padding. The steel coils and springs are then removed, and the wood frame is dismantled. The resulting materials are sorted and sent to various Recycling Centers. The steel coils and springs can be recycled into new products, such as car parts or construction materials. The wood frame can be used to create mulch or compost. Finally, the fabric and padding can be recycled into carpet padding or insulation. Recycling a mattress takes some effort, but it is a great way to reduce landfill waste and give new life to an old piece of furniture.

Businesses that generate a big volume of mattresses should collaborate with a mattress recycler to establish a temporary or year-round collection location. To limit exposure to weather, mattresses should be collected in a dry, covered storage area with side-door access, such as a storage container, trailer, or warehouse space. Mattress collection in any type of open-top dumpster, even if covered loosely with a tarp, is not suggested. Mattress Stacking Guidelines from the Mattress Recycling Council may be beneficial for hotels, healthcare facilities, property managers, and universities that collect significant volumes of mattresses for recycling.

After arriving at a processing facility, mattresses are usually inspected and treated for bed bugs. Opened and dismantled clean mattresses are the result of a combination of manual and automated methods. Scrap metal, foam, fabrics/textiles, and wood are sorted, compressed, and delivered for recycling or repurposing, such as making compost from shredded wood.

Many garbage carriers demand an additional handling fee when manually sorting mattresses from other waste, therefore recycling mattresses separately may save money compared to the disposal costs. Mattresses can be difficult for movers and disposal sites to manage due to their bulky size and so it is advisable to work with a dedicated mattress recycler. And while the mattress recycling process may not be as sexy as Recycling Paper or Recycling Plastic, it's definitely a topic worth paying attention to.
